Stained and leaded glass is a traditional craft that transforms coloured glass into striking decorative panels using time‑honoured techniques. Each piece is individually cut, shaped, and assembled by hand, creating artwork that is both functional and enduring
.
How the Process Works
Every project begins with a detailed design. A full‑size pattern—known as a “cartoon”—is drawn to map out each individual glass piece and the lead lines that will hold the panel together.
Sheets of coloured, textured, or painted glass are chosen to suit the design. Each shape is carefully cut using specialist tools, then refined to ensure a precise fit within the lead framework
.
Strips of lead, called cames, are used to join the glass pieces. These flexible channels are shaped around the glass and gradually built up into the full panel. Joints are soldered to create a strong, stable structure
.
A waterproofing cement is brushed into the lead channels to secure the glass and strengthen the panel. Once cleaned and polished, the finished piece is ready for installation
